Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) Gets No Respect, while Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ) Forms Attractive Base

Dell (Nasdaq: DELL) is the Rodney Dangerfield of the PC universe, while Hewlett Packard (NYSE: HPQ) is forming a cup and handle base.

Dell was the top dog until Michael Dell decided to take a few years off, and the wheels fell off the wagon. Sure, they make money. And no they're not going the way of Gateway. But, the charts tell the tale of where money is going in the PC world.

Many years ago, yours truly noted, in the pages of some book (frankly, I can't remember which one) that PCs would go the way of refrigerators. Everyone would have one, everyone would love it and would not be able to live without it. But the companies that made them would lose their growth edge as the novelty would wear off.

So, now we've reached the Frigidaire point for Dell, and unlike Apple and Hewlett there hasn't been the blockbuster or exciting new application to take Dell out of the realm of refrigerator makers.

What does HP have that Dell doesn't? It doesn't have an Ipod, or an Iphone. And its Ipaq is an o.k. little box, but it's no Blackberry.

What HP has is more confident investors that right now are willing to take a chance. That usually means confidence in its management. And that's why HP has a bullish looking chart and Dell doesn't.

As far as Wall Street is concerned, they're more willing to put their money in HP's "refrigerator" than in Dell's.
